Tasty “Healthified”: Burger Cups

Have you seen the Tasty videos from BuzzFeed? FINALLY!! Easy recipes in fun to watch video vignettes! But, are those recipes healthy?? No, not so much.

Really? Burger Cups*** with processed white flour, added sugar and non-organic beef? I thought to myself… Can I make these recipes healthier? More delicious? Easier? YES!!! I can!! The videos will come next… here’s the first recipe. Enjoy!

What you’ll need to make 8: 

  • Gluten Free or whole grain pizza dough (thaw if frozen)
  • 1/2 Vidalia onion diced
  • Organic ground turkey (1 pound)
  • 4oz Sneaky Mama Sauce – my pasta/pizza/tomato sauce with 5 sneaky veggies cooked in!
  • 2 tablespoons organic ketchup
  • 1/4 teaspoon of each salt & pepper
  • Avocado oil spray
  • Garnish: small piece of mozzarella, goat, or cheddar cheese – tomatoes, hot sauce, pickles, mustard, lettuce, onion, mushrooms, avocado, etc.
  • Muffin tin & skillet (frying pan)

Let’s get cookin’! – Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Step 1: Roll dough into a tube. Cut in half. Cut each half in half. Then do it again to get 8 equal pieces of dough!

Step 2: Spray the muffin tin with avocado oil. Press each pice of dough into it’s own compartment making the dough into a bowl shape. Bake for 5 minutes.

Step 3: While the dough is baking, heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Spray with avocado oil. Cook onion until starting to brown – stir in salt & pepper – and keep stirring. Reduce heat to medium.

Step 4: Cook ground turkey with the onion. Drain if necessary (turkey is leaner than beef and will not leave a lot of extra fat in the pan). Add Sneaky Mama Sauce + Ketchup to meat and combine completely. Remove from heat.

Step 5: Scoop ground meat mixture into the dough cups and bake for 5 – 7 more minutes. Top with cheese and bake for 1 – 2 more minutes. Remove with forks, garnish and enjoy!

***THESE ARE DELICIOUS! Yes, they are a tab bit more expensive, but the calories, fat & carbs in the Tasty version are OVER THE TOP! Try the Skinny Mama version and fall in love with this quick, easy, delicious AND nutritious meal. Try it with your kiddies… my girls loved helping me make these. It’s a great sensory exercise and it helped my kids to try something new 🙂
