Jake’s Apple Chips
This recipe was so fun to make with our best friend Jake 🙂 Not only did he make three trays worth of these delicious Apple Chips, he ate two trays of them! Thank you Jake for cooking for us.
Alright, so you know the old saying: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, well we could eat 5 apples a day if they were made into Apple Chips. There are LOTS of Apple Chip recipes online, but most of them use sugar and take 2 hours to make! Who has time for that? Our recipe is quick, easy, delicious… oh, and we use honey instead of sugar! Keep in mind that some of the nutritious elements of the apple are baked out… but we add great vitamins and minerals with the honey and cinnamon.
What you’ll need:
2 Apples – we used 1 green apple and 1 pink lady apple
1 Teaspoon cinnamon
1 Tablespoon honey (local, organic please)
3 baking sheets lined with silicone mats or parchment paper
Mandolin with protective holder
Let’s get cookin’:
**Adults ONLY – please do not let your children (under the age of 10) put or remove trays from the oven!
Step 1: Make sure oven has room for 3 trays. Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
Step 2: Wash apples and remove stems. ADULT – set mandolin to #2 thickness.
Step 3: Older kids – use mandolin to slide apples starting from the top of the apple – remove seeds as you go.
Step 4: Brush one side of apple slices with a light coat of honey and arrange on baking sheet.
Step 5: Sprinkle cinnamon on apple slices from a foot above the baking sheet and coat them evenly.
Step 6: ADULT – Put baking sheets in oven to bake for 20 minutes
Step 7: ADULT – Flip apples and sprinkle more cinnamon on the other side. Put back in to bake for 10 minutes.
Step 8: ADULTS – remove from oven and let cool for 5 – 10 minutes. Note: if the apples are not cooked enough add 2 minutes at a time until golden brown.
